This road was named for the former subdivision of Buena Vista. Settled in 1878 and homesteaded in the late 1880s, Buena Vista was subdivided around 1911. Martin Runnalls, developer of Buena Vista, reused the name in 1912 when he built the Buena Vista apartments, which still stand at 102 Avenue and 124 Street. Buena Vista is Spanish for "beautiful view.”

The City of Edmonton began planning a Buena Vista Park in 1957 and purchased the land in 1959. This 80.33-ha. park is located in the Laurier Heights neighbourhood. See Buena Vista Road.
