Welsh-born Dr. Patricia Burns (b. 1920) was a recognized expert in the treatment of breast cancer. She received her education and began practising medicine in Scotland before emigrating to Canada. In 1970 she joined the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton as a radiotherapist. Dr. Burns retired in 1985 and received an honorary degree from the University of Alberta in 1986.
