Naming Edmonton: From Ada to Zoie

Mary Butterworth (d. 1973) was a campaigner who fought school district rulings that forced women teachers to stop work upon getting married. Butterworth was born in Scotland and came to Edmonton in 1926. She became an active member of the University Women's Club, serving as president from 1937 to 1939 as well as being a member of the executive of the Local Council of Women prior to WWII. In 1945 she was elected to the Edmonton Public School Board and served for 12 years. She represented Edmonton on the executive of the Provincial School Trustees Association from 1946 to 1957.
