Since there was no law school in British Columbia at the time, Cairns enrolled at the University of Alberta. After graduation he moved to Calgary where he worked at a law firm headed by the father of future Alberta premier Peter Lougheed. In 1952, Cairns was appointed a justice of the Alberta Supreme Court, and in 1965 became a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
