Naming Edmonton: From Ada to Zoie
Scottish-born Anne Carmichael (1904-1999) was a pioneer Edmonton teacher who taught for more than four decades and supported programs to improve the education system. She emigrated from Scotland to Edmonton in 1911 and began teaching in 1928. Carmichael served as assistant to the director of elementary education in 1953 and earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Alberta in 1954. She was appointed to the senate of the University of Alberta Teachers' Association; served twice as president of the Edmonton Education Local; was president of the Edmonton Education Society and a school board director until her retirement in 1969.
